- 2 cups Japanese short-grain rice
- 2 ½ cups water
- 3 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
For the Fillings:
- 200g fresh salmon, thinly sliced (sushi-grade)
- 1 avocado, thinly sliced
- 1 small cucumber, julienned
- 4 sheets of nori (seaweed)
- 2 tbsp cream cheese (optional, for a creamy twist)
- 2 tbsp tobiko (fish roe) or caviar for garnish
For the Sauce:
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp grated ginger
Extras:
- Wasabi paste and pickled ginger (for serving)
- Soy sauce (for dipping)
- A bamboo sushi mat (makisu)
Instructions
Prepare the Sushi Rice:
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Combine rice and water in a rice cooker or pot, and cook according to the instructions (boil and simmer method works well).
- Once cooked, transfer the rice to a large bowl.
- In a small saucepan, gently heat rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Pour this mixture over the rice and gently fold to combine. Let it cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Sauce:
- Mix soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, and grated ginger in a small bowl. Set aside for drizzling over the sushi later.
Assemble the Sushi Rolls:
- Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the bamboo sushi mat.
- Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
- Arrange your fillings (salmon, avocado, cucumber, and cream cheese) in a horizontal line near the bottom edge of the rice.
- Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly into a cylinder. Seal the edge with a little water.
- Repeat for the remaining ingredients.
Slice and Garnish:
- Use a sharp knife dipped in water to slice the roll into even pieces.
- Drizzle the ginger-soy sauce over the rolls and garnish with tobiko or caviar for a pop of color.
Serve and Enjoy:
- Arrange the sushi on a platter and serve with wasabi, pickled ginger, and soy sauce for dipping.
Unique Tips:
- For a colorful touch, roll some sushi with rice on the outside (uramaki) and coat it with sesame seeds or crushed tempura flakes.
- Experiment with other fillings like grilled eel, mango, or spicy tuna for a personalized twist.
- To make it vegetarian, substitute the fish with roasted bell peppers, marinated tofu, or tempura vegetables.
This unique sushi recipe combines traditional techniques with creative flavors, making it perfect for sushi enthusiasts and newcomers alike!
