Citrus-Berry Sangria with a Hint of Spice

Citrus-Berry Sangria with a Hint of Spice

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle (750ml) of dry red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot works great)
  • 1/2 cup brandy (or orange liqueur for a milder flavor)
  • 1/2 cup elderflower liqueur (adds a floral note)
  • 1 cup sparkling water (for a bubbly kick)
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1/2 cup blackberries
  • 1/2 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 lime, thinly sliced
  • 2-3 star anise (adds warmth and depth)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fruit and Spice Mix:
In a large pitcher or bowl, combine the sliced strawberries, blackberries, orange, lemon, and lime slices. Add the star anise and cinnamon stick. Gently muddle the fruits with a muddler or the back of a spoon to release their juices and aromas.

  2. Add Liquids:
Pour in the red wine, brandy (or orange liqueur), and elderflower liqueur. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

  3. Sweeten (Optional):
Taste the mixture and, if desired, add honey or agave syrup to balance the tartness with a hint of sweetness.

  4. Chill:
Cover the pitcher and let the sangria chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours (overnight is best). This allows the flavors to infuse and deepen.

  5. Serve:
Just before serving, add the sparkling water to the sangria for a fizzy finish. Stir gently.

  6. Garnish:
Pour the sangria into glasses filled with ice, and garnish each with fresh mint leaves for a refreshing aroma. Optionally, you can add a few more slices of citrus for extra flair.

Tips:

  • Feel free to mix and match fruits depending on what’s in season. Peaches, pears, or raspberries can also work wonderfully in this sangria.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace the wine and brandy with sparkling grape juice or pomegranate juice, and skip the liqueurs.

This Citrus-Berry Sangria brings a refreshing, fruity twist to the classic sangria recipe, with subtle floral notes from elderflower and a touch of spice from the star anise and cinnamon. Perfect for gatherings or relaxing evenings!
